Jackrabbit legend Josh Davis returns to coach the wide receivers and serve as the passing game coordinator after a successful run as the offensive coordinator at Northwestern College in Iowa. He was very complimentary about the room that he has returned to and the level of talent, character, and commitment to Jackrabbit football that the players possess.
The group is led by All-American candidate, Jaxon Janke who is one of the most complete wide receivers in the FCS and is gaining steam for the 2023 NFL draft. Davis really spoke to Janke’s character saying that he is easy to get along with and really thrives on coaching and being challenged. Davis says that he is very talented, quick, tough, and has elite ball skills. He is working with Jaxon to add multiple releases off the line of scrimmage to his repertoire as teams will utilize their best cover corner in an attempt to slow him down. Last fall Jaxon had 72 receptions for 1,165 yards, and 5 TDs. Jaxon will improve his draft stock with another ultra-productive season.
Jadon Janke built on a good spring season with a very good fall campaign finishing with 41 receptions for 641 yards, and 9 TDs. Jadon splits his time between the slot and split out. Davis credited him with great effort and said that he is playing really fast right now. During spring ball he was able to create a lot of separation from defensive backs. In terms of skill sets, Davis said they are fairly comparable but Jadon is asked to do a little more in the offense between the positions that that he may be a hair quicker than his twin.
The slot/3rd wide receiver spot is really an open competition at this point between Landon Wolf, Canyon Bauer, Tyler Feldkamp, and Devon Cole. A.J. Coons is also competing for reps but maybe not in the slot (more on him in a bit).
As Jackrabbit fans unfortunately remember, Wolf was lost during the season opener against Colorado State. Davis shared that he is working hard to get back with athletic trainer Charlie Miller. As we have heard since he joined the program, Davis raved about Wolf’s character, work ethic and leadership. He was voted a team captain in recognition of how much his teammates respect him. Davis said that Wolf has really strong hands and an ability to make plays in traffic. Fingers crossed he is back and 100% for the game against Iowa.
Canyon Bauer has been the starter in the slot for the past two seasons. He had 9 receptions for 152 yards last season. Davis said Bauer was really impressive during winter workouts. He has a great work ethic, high character and is really mature for a college athlete. Coach Stig pointed to Canyon’s work ethic and selflessness multiple times during interviews last season. Davis said that he trusts Bauer to play all three wide receiver positions and to do them well. He said that Canyon needs to be ready to make plays when given the chance and to mentally prepare like he is getting the ball every play.
In limited duty, Tyler Feldkamp flashed last season finishing with 4 receptions for 48 yards and had 12 punt returns for 26 yards but a long of 14. Definitely not a huge sample size BUT when the ball was in his hands, it was easy to see why the potential of the true freshman. Davis said that he is asking Tyler to focus just on the slot this season and that this has resulted in him playing faster. The team really likes his chances to make plays given his talent level and that he will likely be facing 1 on 1 coverage with all of the other weapons on the Jackrabbit offense . His attitude, toughness, and desire for coaching are things that stand out to Davis.
Devon Cole Jr. is a player who we began to hear about last year as somebody to watch. He is the smallest guy in the room but is a really tough kid who is ready to compete. Davis said that he is the spark plug of the group. Given his size, folks might expect him to play primarily in the slot but Davis said they will use him at all three spots. Davis said that he had a great spring and will get plenty of opportunities in camp to earn his spot. Cole was a high school quarterback and is still refining his craft at wide receiver. His potential is really high and I think he could open some eyes this fall!
AJ Coons has been compared to Jason Schneider by multiple folks close to the Jackrabbit program. He is now 6’5 and still has terrific speed. Davis said that they will figure out how to get him on the field this year because his speed, size, and balls skills are so good. He is unique because of his big body, wide hips, and muscle allow him to finish plays. I’m excited to see him make plays this year.
Last year a surprise addition to the roster was Patrick Hoffman, an NIU transfer and Mark Gronowski’ s high school teammate. Patrick was converting from safety to wide receiver and has really improved according to Davis. His speed of play has picked up and Davis appreciates how accountable he is to his role on the team. Davis see him as a threat on the intermediate routes.
Another young player who grew in the offense last year is Grahm Goering. Davis describes him as a strong player with good speed, balls skills, and strong hands. He has struggled with some nagging injuries but is getting healthy and is growing in route running techniques. Davis views him as someone that has special teams potential and can contribute in that area this season.
A player that showed up in the Scout Player of the Week awards repeatedly last season was Daxon Lindholm. Davis raved about Daxon’s willingness to serve the team in any capacity and for being uber coachable. The former Army commit is learning to use his quickness to his advantage vs. the larger defenders. He came to SDSU as a running back but with his coachability and accountability this could be a guy worth watching for future seasons.
The new guys to the group are Rhett Foster, Jason Harris and Dane Miller. Foster is very athletic but raw. He is a state champion sprinter and hurdler in Kansas. Davis said he has a bright future and that he has a high work ethic! Harris was a do-it-all athlete for his high school team and is now settling in at just playing wide receiver. He is a big bodied guy and is studying hard to learn the playbook. A late commit to the class is Miller. Davis said Miller has a zest for life and that he is super impressed with his athleticism. He can really jump and run and has a large wingspan. He is converting from high school quarterback as well and will be learning the techniques of the position. Davis is high on this trio and can’t wait to see them with pads on during camp!
This group has as good of a starting duo as any group in the MVFC. It will be interesting to see how Davis/Lujan utilize the bevy of talented younger talent that is chomping at the bit to make plays. I’m really excited to see who emerges in the slot. I think if Jadon and Jaxon can continue to make plays like they have the past two seasons the Jackrabbit offense COULD be even better than it has been.
Go Jacks!
